Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a key hormone released by the pituitary gland, plays a very important role in a woman's menstrual cycle. FSH stimulates an egg in the ovary to mature for ovulation. However, women with diminished ovarian reserve (defined as low egg count and/or poor egg quality) require higher and higher levels of FSH to stimulate ovulation. Diminished ovarian reserve is most commonly caused as a result of the natural aging process. Thus, FSH tests are often used to determine whether a woman has entered perimenopause, which can result in intermediate ovarian reserve. A woman with diminished ovarian reserve (low egg count and/or poor egg quality) may have infertility, and/or early miscarriages. Diminished ovarian reserve is a very common cause of infertility, especially for women over 35 years, affecting approximately 10-30 percent of women with infertility. Standard FSH urine strips only check for levels below 25mIU/ml of FSH. OvuStrip's more sensitive FSH tests check for levels above or below 10mIU/ml. Why does this matter? Women that are in perimenopause may have levels under 25mIU/ml but still over 10 mIU/ml. These more sensitive tests will help to identify women in the “intermediate” range-not yet over 25mIU/ml but over 10mIU/ml of FSH, which can begin to affect ovarian reserve and therefore, fertility. FSH Results: Low: 10mIU/ml: Ovarian reserve may have started to diminish with the transition to perimenopause. Ovarian reserve may be diminished with reduced fertility. If OvuStrip's FSH sensitive strip test levels are consistently positive (>10mIU/ml) when tested starting on cycle day 3, we suggest to follow up with your doctor for further evaluation of your fertility health.
