Description
FNDC5, encoding a 23 kDa membrane protein, is cleaved and secreted as irisin, a newly identified hormone. Muscle FNDC5 expression, triggered by exercise, increases circulating irisin levels, which activates adipocyte thermogenic programs, enhancing mitochondrial heat production and energy expenditure.
