1.Description:
When you want to change the circuit by turning a knob, a potentiometer is the tool. It has been proven that sometimes you want to adjust the circuit without manually turning the knob, and the DS1841 I2C logarithmic resistor can achieve this. It is a programmable resistor, similar to I2C potentiometers such as DS3502, so why do we need another one?
The biggest difference between the two is how the resistance changes with the wiper. The resistance of DS3502 is linearly related to the setting of the wiper. Every time the wiper is replaced by a given amount, the resistance changes by the same amount. For DS1841, the relationship between resistance and tap settings is logarithmic. This means that as the wiper settings change, the size of the resistance will depend on the current position set within the wiper range.
Logarithmic potentiometers are used in audio applications for volume control and other functions, as they can match the human ear's response to sound.
The resistance range of DS1841 is 22kOhms to 3.7 kOhms, with 128 tap points. More interestingly, DS1841 can be configured to adjust its resistance based on temperature and has hysteresis function to prevent jumping.
