While often sold in kits as "applicators," these specific tweezer-style tools are primarily designed for handling the lens (moving it from the case to your finger) and removing the lens from your eye. Using them to place the lens directly onto your eyeball can be awkward and risky due to the angle.
Here is the safest, standard way to use this tool to assist with the application process:
1. Preparation & Hygiene
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then dry them with a lint-free towel.
Clean the tweezers: Rinse the silicone tips of the tweezers with your contact lens solution (saline or multi-purpose solution). Never use tap water.
Inspect the tips: Ensure the soft silicone covers are secure on the plastic tips so you don't scratch your lens or eye.
2. Using the Tool for Application (The Transfer Method)
The main goal of using tweezers for application is to keep the lens sterile by avoiding contact with your fingers until the last second. Retrieve: Use the tweezers to gently grab the contact lens from your storage case. The soft tips allow you to grip it without tearing it.
Inspect: Hold the lens up to the light to check for debris or tears.
Transfer: Gently place the lens onto the tip of your clean, dry index finger. Note: Most people find it much safer and easier to insert the lens using their finger because you have better control over the pressure and angle than you do with plastic tweezers.
Insert: Use your finger to place the lens on your eye as you normally would.
3. Using the Tool for Removal
These tools are often more popular for removing soft lenses than inserting them, especially for people with long fingernails. Look up slightly and pull your lower eyelid down.
Hold the tweezers with your dominant hand.
Very gently touch the soft tips to the front of the contact lens (on the lower part of your eye, not the pupil).
Apply a tiny amount of pressure to pinch the lens between the soft tips.
Pull the lens away from the eye.
Important Safety Tips Do not poke: Be extremely careful not to touch your actual eyeball with the tweezers.
Soft Tips Only: If the silicone tips fall off, do not use the bare plastic tweezers on your eye.
Sterilize: Wash the tool with contact lens solution after every use and let it air dry.
