When backlit it creates a diffusion effect, like the flare of a vintage lens, as if enveloped in light. While maintaining resolution, the White Mist creates a nostalgic mood, rendering scenes that linger in memory, like landscapes recalled from the past. The White Mist No.05 has less softening effect than No.1.

■Lowering Contrast
White Mist No.05 reduces contrast between highlights and shadows by diffusing light, resulting in soft, pale tones. In scenes with forward light or no strong light sources, the contrast reduction is modest, making it a good match for dark, moist expressions.

■Soft and Gentle Rendering
Even when shooting with high-performance lenses, White Mist No.05 allows for soft rendering similar to old classic lenses. Focus edges remain sharp while the overall atmosphere gently softens. In portrait shots, the White Mist No.05 smoothens the model's skin.

■Soft Flare Effect in Backlighting
Flares are traditionally unwelcomed in photography, but recent trends see photographers using flares as an artistic element in their compositions. When shooting backlit with the White Mist filter, it produces a flare that softly diffuses light, much like an old lens, adding an even more dramatic atmosphere to backlit scenes.

■Comparison with Kenko White Mist No.1
Since White Mist No.05 is half as strong as No.1, it provides a balanced diffusion in backlit scenes that might otherwise appear excessively washed out with No.1.

■Comparison with Kenko Black Mist Series
White Mist is a soft filter that incorporates white diffusing powder, different to the Kenko Black Mist's black diffusing powder, melted inside the glass. It is more effective in reducing contrast than Black Mist, and can reduce saturation to create a brighter tone.
