Description

In the design of the 1 Arizona Goldback Gold Note, you'll find a woman in traditional Mexican dress of the early 19th century in front of the Mission San Jose de Tumacacori. Established by Father Kino in 1691 in the Santa Cruz River Valley, Mission San Jose de Tumacacori represents one of the oldest European settlements in Arizona and served as a vital link in the chain of Spanish missions stretching northward from Mexico. The mission complex, with its distinctive dome and adobe walls, underwent multiple construction phases before being abandoned in the 1840s due to Apache raids and the political upheaval following Mexican independence.
