Peppermint (Mentha X Piperita) is a perennial cultivated herb, up to 100 cm high. The plant does not occur in the wild. The stems of the plant are erect, tetrahedral. The rhizome is horizontal, branched, creeping. The leaves are opposite, on short petioles, elongated-ovate, pointed, with a heart-shaped base and sharp-edged edges. The flowers are small, red-violet, bisexual, sessile. The plant blooms from late June to September. The fruit consists of 4 dark brown nuts, about 0.75 mm long, enclosed in the remaining calyx. Fruits are formed very rarely. The plant propagates vegetatively with the help of root layers.
