Special Features

  • Hands-On Learning: Engage students with a practical demonstration of electrical circuits using everyday materials, showing how a simple setup can power a digital clock.
  • Conceptual Clarity: Illustrates the conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy, helping students understand how electrochemical cells work in real-world applications.
  • Basic Electrochemistry: Introduces key electrochemistry concepts, including how chemical reactions between electrodes (copper and zinc) and the potato's acidic juice generate electrical energy.
  • Chemical Reactions: Allows students to explore oxidation-reduction reactions and their role in producing electric current within a simple battery.
  • Exploring Conductivity: Provides an opportunity to experiment with different fruits or vegetables to see which produces more voltage, teaching about material conductivity and its effects.

Description

The Two Potato Clock is a fun demonstration of the principles of an electrochemical cell. The blue plastic potato (fruit) clock has two compartments designed to hold potatoes or fruit. The coils, one red and one blue, are inserted into a different potato while the green coiled wire is connected to both potatoes, creating a circuit.
