This shark differs slightly from the dogfish shark, the most common preserved shark specimen. Unlike the dogfish, the sharpnose has no spiracles, possesses an anal fin, and the female's ovaries are found on the left side of the body. However, they do share many of the same anatomical features such as the valvular intestine, rectal gland, and claspers on the male pelvic fins. As an in-class activity, have students explore the anatomical similarities and differences between the 2 species for themselves. Note: Supplies are limited.
